Dear Readers,
It's already Thursday! I can't believe that the summer challenge is almost over! The cover art for today's blog posts is a delicious meal that I made today. Another example of different things you can do to get rid of writer's block since I wrote a lot today! I know that I recently made a summary of all of the suggestion to help overcome writer's block, but I think I will summarize everything again to have some similarity with the Tuesday's blog post. Here they are:
A helpful writing exercise is to throw spaghetti at the wall for 1 to 5 minutes, and see what sticks. You write down everything that you can think of for 1 to 5 minutes around any starting concept or word. After you do this once or twice, you can see which ideas and phrases you like or dislike. You can use something you wrote down in your next poem or other piece of writing.
Sometimes, you need to relax. Take a break from writing and do something else like yoga, meditation, art, reading, cooking, etc... Try and release your tension and stress so that you can really focus on your writing.
Ekphrastic Poetry -- using photos and art to help you write something. You can also think of it as a warmup or exercise. I find it very useful when I have a creative block.
Brain Dump -- When you write your first draft, try and write everything down at once. The phrasings, punctuation, composition, and words don't matter yet. All that matters is that the idea gets on the page. Control your inner critic and let yourself loose!
What people think is Giving up -- If you feel really stuck while trying to write something, then you should take a step back and go do something else. After a few hours, or a few days, come back to the piece of writing and take another shot at it. Hopefully, this time you will actually be able to get some words on the page.
Write everyday. It doesn't have to be perfect just use it as a warm up for the day. Later on you might look back at these warm ups and find that some of them have a lot of potential. Then you can build off of them and create a beautiful poem.
Here are some prompts that will hopefully help you all write something. Here they are:
Write about an object that brings back several memories and describe those specific memories + how they connect.
Write about some idioms and idiomatic expressions and what they might mean to you. An example would be, “you can’t judge a book by its cover”.
Pick a color that provokes memories and go from there. How does the color make you feel when you experience it in you daily life? How does the color taste, smell, look like, etc...)
Write something about the words you find on street signs or the names of some streets.
Choose one of your favorite spices and relate it’s flavor to an event that has happened recently in you life or to any person (yourself, one of your family members, you friend, etc…)
8. Always keep a clean environment when you write. This will help a lot with the creative flow.
9. Try to step away from writing for a few days and instead pick up another creative project. Some creative hobbies/projects include; gardening, painting, cooking, and much more. You can also explore photography, embroidery, and so on. After those few days, you can go back to writing and maybe this time, you will have a bunch of ideas floating around in your head!
Day Fifty Four's Progress:
Today I edited my poems A LOT! I was feeling really motivated today so I worked on my poems first thing in the morning around 7am. It was nice to feel productive and get things done. I edited a lot of lines of the two poems, and I added a couple of lines to each poem. I also changed the punctuations a little bit. There is something that I don't really like about the first poem (the one about a harbor). The last line of the poem seems off. I wanted to put the real name of a harbor but I don't know if that harbor actually has a "hidden secret". It's kind of a fictional poem so I'm still debating on what to do. Do you guys have any feedback for me?
Let me know which of the suggestion you find the most helpful!
