Orange Oblivion

Writer's picture: Golden InkGolden Ink

Dear Readers,

It feels like school just started and now the semester is almost coming to an end. One thing that has not come to an end, however, is the constant theft of persimmon from our tree. Nothing can inspire me more to write a poem than my annoyance at these squirrel thieves. I don't detest squirrels but it does pose a problem when they take all of the persimmons and leave none for me to eat. Here is my poem, I hope you like it!

Orange Oblivion

We underestimate

The power of their claws,

That can rip apart a persimmon

Or even our own soul

I’m looking at one,

Through the kitchen window

They greedily take persimmon,

One by one,

Rip one small bite and throw it

Now no one else can eat it

But they falsely reassure themselves

That they are helping the other wildlife.

When they know they have done something wrong,

They stare at you in the eyes until

you break the gaze,

They are ruthless and vicious

And are the quickest to run from their mistakes.

We bond so nicely with them

And that’s because

The kitchen window is actually a mirror,

And those squirrels are actually our reflection—

Reflecting the humanity left in our society.
