Dear Readers,
With an increasing interest in neuroscience and biology-related topics, I've been pushing myself to combine my two interests of poetry and science. In this way, I've started to write more and more poems inspired by neuroscience and using metaphors to depict complicated neural phenomenons. Recently, I wrote a poem about humans experiencing their emotions, and juxtaposed this idea to how the brain regulates emotions in a technical manner. Here is the poem:
Facing the Brain’s Feelings
A smooth blanket to gloss over,
A sweet and cozy protection
From the, sometimes, harsh reality
Of the real world.
A soft like-butter texture,
Malleable and adaptable,
Rich in yellow and joy.
How I wait
For my fingers to intertwine with my little sister’s
Sweet comfort, the feelings of home.
How the emotionally charged amygdala
Sits comfortably in her home.
Slowly diffusing my feelings for the day.
Sometimes it feels like the role of a dice,
Other times like a planned ballet.
Hope you enjoyed reading it!
